PMA     V S      NMA

Isn’t it a battle?  Well for some of us more than others I suspect.

Are people born with a positive or negative attitude? I’ve heard that a new born baby starts with a clean slate, and becomes a product of his or her environment. Yet, we also know that there are mental illnesses, chemical imbalances, and traits that we inherit from our parents. So it would be fair to say that people can be born with a pre-disposition for a PMA or NMA.

We know from Napoleon Hills teachings that we can become a product of our environment and that we do indeed to have the POWER to change and direct our thoughts.

(Proverbs 23:7) For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Grant Von Harrison said; Your thoughts dictate your circumstances because thoughts

Govern habits, and habits dictate circumstances.

When a person is groping in life, “we say he has not found himself.” This statement is not accurate. Self is created, not found.

David O McKay said; Each one of us is the architect of his own fate; and he is unfortunate indeed who will try to build himself without the inspiration of God, without realizing that he grows from within, not from without.

Spencer W. Kimball said; How could a person become what he is not thinking?

Nor is and thought, when persistently entertained, too small to have its effect.

For me PMA vs NMA has been a battle my whole life. As a kid being very shy and bashful, I was regularly teased because of my red hair, which now is more auburn and gray than red, and my first name, which is why in the 5th grade I started going by my middle name Allen. I also, have had to fight off negative influences from my father telling me that I was no good for nothing SOB as a kid growing up.

Now I should also say my father lacked positive influence in his own life and that those kind of comments were usually said in anger. Yet they have had a profound impact on my mental attitude. As a kid, as an adult and yet today.

I’m much better and getting better and better all the time. That’s why when I first heard of the Napoleon Hill World Learning Center there was no question about participating in its programs.

Adults have a profound impact on children.

Our son Dustin

– 6 to 8 months Deb notice he was a little different.

– It was confirmed by a Doctor, he displayed autistic behaviors which became more
obvious as he grew older.

– One of the neat things he did that was very different, was taking a kleenex and rubbing
it together in the sun light coming through the window, to see the little flickering of
particles that it created. He called this Angel fire.

– Of course, there were things that were not so neat. Like being fascinated with eggs from
the refrigerator. He would take an egg and feel it very carefully, examine it up close,
and then toss it up in the air and watch it go splat on the floor. We had to padlock our

– We sought out intervention therapies such as sensory integration, diet and positive re-

– Today because of this, he is very high functioning, still learning disabled, has high degree of talent and skills when it comes to art, has a full time job with a landscaping company and they love him. Because he is very structured and detailed. He is married, has a PMA and a high self esteem.

I know we all have life experiences that create this on going battle of PMA vs NMA.

A point we all should strive to remember and act upon, is that our influence on the lives of our families, friends and even strangers will either build their PMA or their NMA.

Many times in our lives, we are crumpled, stomped into the ground, and spat upon,
because of decisions we made, or circumstances that just came our way.
We may sometimes feel as though we are worthless.  But no matter what
has happened or what will happen, we will never lose our value.

Dirty or clean, crumpled, or finely creased, we still have great value to those
who love us, and those with whom we come into contact with during our life journey.

We always have the ability to have positive influence on the lives of others. Even if it is a simple smile or a small kind act or something bigger. We never lose that ability.

Because, we have the POWER!

Napoleon Hill says;

Form the habit of saying or doing something every day which will make someone else

feel better. You can do this with a phone call, a postcard or a simple act of kindness… One good deed a day will keep old man gloom away.

Napoleon Hill teaches – At birth you arrive figuratively clutching two sealed envelopes. One is labeled “Rewards,” and the other “Penalties.”

He says; The first envelope contains a list of all the benefits you will enjoy from taking possession of your own mind and using it to get what you want.

The second carries a list of the consequences that will befall you if you neglect controlling your mind and directing it toward a worthwhile goal.

  • Sound health, both physical and mental
Napoleon Hill says; Live in a style that suits your physical and spiritual requirements, and don’t waste time keeping up with the Joneses.
  • Financial independence
  • Enduring friendships
Napoleon Hill says; Admit that love is the finest medication for your body and your soul. Love changes the entire chemistry of your body and conditions it for the expression of a Positive Mental Attitude. It also extends the space you occupy in the hearts of others. The best way to receive love is to give it.
  • Longevity and a well-balanced life
Napoleon Hill says; Avoid the fear of old age by remembering that nothing is ever taken from you without being replaced by something of equal or greater value. Youth, for instance, is replaced by wisdom.
  • The wisdom to understand yourself and others

  • Mental and physical ailments of all kinds
  • Poverty and misery your entire life
  • Many enemies and few friends
  • Being a victim of every negative influence

Ever heard of the “Gift of Goodbye?” The gift of good bye is when a negative toxic person in your life says Goodbye for the last time.

Napoleon Hill says; Learn to close the door of your mind on all failures from your past. Clear your mind of any influence which does not support a Positive Mental Attitude.

Find out what you want most in life and go after it.

Joel Osteen tells this analogy:

Today is a new beginning. Don’t look back.  You see when you are driving in your car you have a big windshield and a small rear view mirror. The reason the windshield is so large and the rear-view mirror so small, is because what has happened in your past is not near as important as what is in your future.
Where you are going is much more important than where you have been.

  • A wasted life is one that does nothing to better the human condition.

Which choice will we make?

Napoleon Hill teaches that out of every adversity comes an equivalent benefit.

On September 11th when terrorist struck the twin towers, that was a huge negative for our Country. Yet, we saw some positive things as a result. People coming together to help one another. People becoming more patriotic.

Lee Greenwood was inspired to write a song. I’d like to read you a couple of the verses.

If tomorrow all the things were gone I worked for all my life, and I had to start again, with just my children and my wife. I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today.
Cause the flag still stands for freedom, and they can’t take that away. I’m proud to be an American! Where at least I know I’m free! And I won’t forget the men who died who gave that right to me.
I’d gladly stand up next to you, and defend her still today! Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land!
God Bless the U.S.A.!

When reflecting upon the September 11th attack and the Hero’s who gave their lives there in the Twin Towers, trying to rescue and assist others to safety, and those on the airplane who caused it to crash into the ground while fighting the hijackers, to prevent the death of perhaps thousands more, to their own demise. And all those who fought throughout history to preserve our freedom. And those currently fighting to preserve our rights and luxuries that we too often take for granted.

I wonder, would I have lived up to that noble title “Hero” had I been in their shoes?
I like to think positive, “yes most definitely”! However, that is easy to say isn’t it? It is much different I’m sure, actually being put to the test. I pray you and I will never have to be tested to the extreme of having to put our lives on the line.

But how can we really know what we would do if we were?

Maybe we can’t or maybe we can get a feel for our own ability to stand up and serve others, maybe not to the magnitude of the hero’s I mentioned, yet tested to be hero’s in small ways in which we have opportunities to serve others in times of need. Like when a friend asks for help, or when volunteers are asked for from your church congregation to help someone with a move, or repair project or any of many opportunities we have to serve our fellow human beings, brothers and sisters.

Do we stand up and provide that assistance willingly and without hesitation?

I believe that those who do, are the ones who are also more likely to stand up when a really big opportunity to serve comes their way. Big or small we can help lighten someone else’s load, if only for a moment or forever to them, we can also be a hero.

I strive to pass the small test that come my way and hopefully that better prepares me to be ready in the event I’m ever put to a really big test.

So I can stand up and take appropriate positive action!

We are certainly blessed to live in America, blessed to live the life styles that we do, blessed to have the opportunity to raise our level of lifestyle whenever we choose to do so and in so doing, putting ourselves in a better position, to do more good for others.

In fact, do we not have an obligation to do so! To make the very most of our lives, to show respect for those that gave their lives, so we NOW have the opportunity to enjoy our life.

Napoleon Hill says; Nothing great has ever been achieved without a PMA.

Recognize that your mental attitude is the only thing over which you and I and only

You and I have complete control.

We have the POWER!
